Trailer Wiring and Light Repair
Most trailer lighting trouble is not the bulb. It is a corroded plug, a ground that has rusted loose, or a wire chafed through on the frame. Typical prices around Ocala: one fault found and fixed $100 to $200; a full rewire about $400 for a 4-way trailer and about $600 for a 7-way with brakes, plus parts. We test every circuit at the plug before we start and again before we leave.
What Florida requires
The lights are not optional, and the Florida Statutes say exactly what has to work:
| Requirement | Statute |
|---|---|
| At least two red taillamps visible from 1,000 feet to the rear | s. 316.221(1) |
| White light making the rear plate legible from 50 feet | s. 316.221(2) |
| Stop lamps, red or amber, visible from 300 feet in normal sunlight | s. 316.234(1) |
| Turn signals visible from 300 feet (under 80 inches wide) or 500 feet (80 inches or wider) | s. 316.234(2) |
| Over 3,000 lb gross: front and rear clearance lamps, two side markers and two reflectors each side, rear stop light | s. 316.2225(4) |
| 3,000 lb or less: two rear reflectors, plus a stop light if the trailer hides the truck’s | s. 316.2225(6) |
| Front side lamps and reflectors amber, rear ones red | s. 316.224 |
Lamps are required from sunset to sunrise and during any rain, smoke or fog (s. 316.217). In a Florida summer afternoon storm, that means daytime too.
How we find the fault
- Test at the plug. Each pin, with a tester, with the truck connected. This splits the problem in two: truck side or trailer side.
- Check the ground. The white ground wire and where it bolts to the frame. Rust, paint and loose bolts are the classic causes of dim, flickering or crossed lights.
- Follow the harness. Along the tongue, through the frame, and to each lamp, looking for chafing, crushed sections and splices that have corroded.
- Check each lamp and socket. Corroded sockets, water in the lens, broken lamp housings.
- Fix, then test everything again, including the brake circuit and the breakaway on a 7-way.

Horse trailers, boat trailers and wiring
Horse trailers carry more circuits than a utility trailer: interior and loading lights, sometimes a battery for them, plus the brake and breakaway circuits. Every extra splice is another place for corrosion. On boat trailers, the lights go under water at every launch, and that is hard on sockets and splices. See boat trailer repair.
When the lights and the brakes act up together
On a 7-way trailer, the brakes, the breakaway and the lights share the plug and the ground. Dexter’s troubleshooting chart lists broken wires, loose connections and a faulty ground as the causes of intermittent brakes, and those are the same failures that make lights flicker. If both are acting up, start at the plug and the ground. See trailer lights not working or flickering and trailer brake repair.
Where the work happens
Wiring is done where the trailer sits. We need the tow vehicle there too if the fault might be on the truck side, since the only honest test of a trailer circuit is at a live plug.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to fix trailer lights?
Finding and fixing one fault, such as a bad ground, a corroded plug, a broken wire or one lamp, typically runs $100 to $200. A full rewire runs about $400 for a 4-way trailer and about $600 for a 7-way with brakes, plus parts.
Why do my trailer lights work sometimes and not others?
Intermittent faults are usually a connection: a corroded plug pin, a loose or rusted ground, or a wire chafed through where it runs along the frame. Dexter's brake troubleshooting chart lists the same three for brakes that cut in and out, because brakes and lights share the plug.
Should I switch to LED lights?
LED lamps are a common replacement, and we fit them if you want them. The wiring and ground still have to be good, or LEDs flicker just like bulbs.
Do you fix the plug on my truck too?
Yes, the truck end of the plug and the controller wiring are part of the circuit. Published shop prices put controller and plug wiring at about $250.
