Trailer Axle and Suspension Repair

An axle needs replacing when it is bent, the spindle is damaged, or the trailer has outgrown its rating. Typical installed prices: idler axle $400 to $850, 3,500 lb electric brake axle $650 to $1,250, 5,200 to 6,000 lb $900 to $1,600, 7,000 lb $1,000 to $1,800. Springs, hangers and equalizers are often the real problem, and a tandem suspension refresh runs about $500. We measure before we condemn an axle.

The signs of an axle or suspension problem

Dexter’s tire wear chart is the best diagnostic tool most owners have, because the tires tell you what the axle is doing:

Tire wearCause, per DexterWhat we check
Wear on one side of the treadLoss of camber or overloadingBent axle, overload
Toe wearIncorrect toe-inBent axle or spindle
Both edges wornUnder-inflationPressure first
Center wornOver-inflationPressure first
CuppingOut of balanceBearing adjustment, balance
Flat spotsWheel lockup and skiddingBrakes

Dexter also warns that once a wear pattern is established in a tire it is hard to stop, even after the cause is fixed, so a fixed axle often needs tires too. See tires wearing on one edge.

Other signs: the trailer sits lower on one side, the springs have gone flat, a hanger weld has cracked, or the trailer dog-tracks behind the truck. Dexter’s alignment guidance is specific: measured from the trailer’s king pin to the center of each end of the axle, the difference should not exceed 1/16 inch, and on a tandem the axles must be within 1/8 inch of each other.

Springs, hangers and equalizers

On a leaf spring tandem, the springs, hangers, shackles and equalizer carry the load between the axles. Dexter’s maintenance chart says to inspect springs for wear and loss of arch, inspect hanger welds, and grease wet bolts and equalizers where fitted. A tandem suspension refresh runs about $500 in published shop prices. A cracked hanger is a welding job.

Torsion axles

Dexter describes its Torflex torsion axle as a steel torsion bar surrounded by four natural rubber cords, completely self-contained within the axle tube, instead of leaf springs. Dexter also warns not to weld on the Torflex beam, because of the rubber cords inside. Price is the spring-axle price plus about $100 to $300.

Upgrading capacity

If your trailer now carries more than it was built for, a heavier axle is only part of the answer. Tires, wheels, hangers and the frame all have ratings, and the lowest one is the trailer’s real limit. Your trailer’s VIN label lists its gross rating. We will tell you honestly if an upgrade makes sense or if the trailer is the limit.

While the axle is out

A new axle usually comes with new hubs, bearings and brakes, which is a good reason to check the brake controller setup afterward. If the old axle was salvageable and only the hubs were bad, a bearing service may be all it needed. That is why we look first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace a trailer axle?

Typically $400 to $850 installed for an idler axle with no brakes, $650 to $1,250 for a 3,500 lb electric brake axle, $900 to $1,600 for 5,200 to 6,000 lb, and $1,000 to $1,800 for 7,000 lb. Torsion axles run about $100 to $300 more than the spring-axle price.

How do I know if my axle is bent?

Uneven tire wear is the usual sign. Dexter's tire wear chart links wear on one side of the tread to loss of camber or overloading, and toe wear to incorrect toe-in. A bent spindle shows up in its troubleshooting chart as a replace-the-axle item.

Can an axle be replaced at the farm?

Sometimes. A bolt-on spring axle swap can often be done where the trailer sits on a firm, level spot. A welded-on axle, a hanger repair or a heavier axle usually needs the shop. The quote says which.

What about leaf springs and equalizers?

Dexter's maintenance chart says to inspect springs for wear and loss of arch, and to grease wet bolts and equalizers where fitted. Published shop prices put a suspension replacement on a tandem at about $500.
