Trailer Repair in Fort McCoy

Fort McCoy is an unincorporated community northeast of Ocala on County Road 316, between Sparr and Eureka and directly north of Silver Springs on County Road 315, on the west edge of the Ocala National Forest. Out here, trailers haul boats to the Ocklawaha and Rodman, horses to the farms, and equipment to the land. We repair them at Ocala prices: bearing repack $150 to $250 per axle, bearings and races $150 to $360 after water gets in, brake adjustment $80 to $150, a lighting fault $100 to $200.

Why Fort McCoy is different

Fort McCoy sits within reach of a lot of launch points. The county’s visitor bureau lists public boat ramps on the Ocklawaha River at Ray Wayside Park, Gore’s Landing, Moss Bluff and Eureka East and West, and the Orange Springs Boat Ramp on Rodman Reservoir, listed with no launch fee and round-the-clock access; the bureau ranks Rodman among the top largemouth bass lakes in Florida. A Fort McCoy boat trailer may launch at any of them.

It is also a place with long county-road miles. CR 316 and CR 315 carry trailers to Ocala and out toward the forest, and a trailer that does those runs every week wears bearings and tires on the miles.

Boat trailers off the Ocklawaha and Rodman

Every manual we checked treats water in the hub as a special case. Featherlite’s service chart says an unsealed bearing that has been immersed should be replaced before the next use; 4-Star says to replace promptly if immersed; Dexter says boat trailer bearings and brakes should be cleaned, dried and relubricated before storage, and that its sealed Nev-R-Lube bearings are not designed for immersion. See boat trailer repair and wheel bearing service.

Lights that go under water at every launch corrode at the sockets, splices and grounds. Florida still wants two red taillamps visible from 1,000 feet and stop lamps visible from 300 feet (s. 316.221, s. 316.234). See trailer lights not working or flickering.

Utility, equipment and horse trailers

The same county roads carry utility and equipment trailers. A wood deck that carries a tractor or a skid steer wears at the wheel tracks and the tie-down points; deck sections run about $290 plus lumber for a 4 by 8 foot section in published shop prices. See trailer floor replacement. For horse trailers, the floor, bearings, brakes and breakaway need the same pre-season attention as anywhere in the county; see horse trailer repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you come out to Fort McCoy?

Yes. Fort McCoy is northeast of Ocala on County Road 316, and we group visits out that way. Any trip charge is a line on the quote before you agree to anything.

My trailer launches at Orange Springs or Eureka. What wears first?

The bearings and the lights. Featherlite's service chart says an unsealed bearing that has been immersed should be replaced before the next use, and dunked lights corrode at the sockets and grounds. A repack runs $150 to $250 per axle; a lighting fault $100 to $200.

Can you work on a trailer parked on a sand lot?

Usually. We need a firm spot for jack stands under the frame. If the trailer cannot be safely supported where it sits, we will say so before we start.
